Biography[]

Basket Man bird cherp

The Basket Man making bird sounds to signal the fifth spy.

In the year TA 2941 of the Third Age, Fram Watchman was hired by the Master of Esgaroth to keep an eye on Bard when he was suspicious that he was behind the growing threat of his authority. When first spy's sons hit their contraption to send a signal, he popped his head out of a basket and alerted the fifth spy with a bird sound. The next day around nightfall, Fram was inside his basket when he heard the roar of the dragon. Evacuating with a large number of civilians, Fram was killed by Smaug during the destruction in Lake-town.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Fram Watchman was portrayed by Peter Jackson in a cameo in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, who was the director, writer, and producer of the film trilogy and also cameoed in An Unexpected Journey as a Dwarf and as Pete Dreary in the second film, but all three roles were uncredited. His scenes however, were cut from the theatrical version and were not put in the Extended Edition because Fran Walsh vetoed it and thought that the acting was just stupid. If Fram's scenes were included, it would have been the second time Pete had done a dual role since Bad Taste and credited in the end credits since King Kong.
